This antique framed print of Holy Child of Atocha is from the late 18th Century to mid 19th Century, and is in the form of an old hand-colored lithograph that was glued onto a thin canvas gauze that was then gesso'ed on the back for reinforcement. The frame is wood with hand carved gesso, of which we have a quite a bit of loss due to age and wear. The frame is in a Rococo Revival style. The print has torn in areas along edges, revealing the gauze canvas underneath, and most of the gesso back has flaked away. There is fading and darkening in the lithograph. We can really see and feel the age of this piece, which came from the estate of one of the founding families of what is the center of old Albuquerque, and in Spanish Colonial times was mostly a center square with homes built all around it, and a few larger properties in the perimeter. Today that area is known as "Old Town." Santo Nino de Atocha is an important saint to people of Spanish descent, as devotion to the saint originated in Spain. The original statue was taken from Spain to Mexico and resides in the town of Fresnillo, Mexico. He is the patron of prisoners, dating back to Spanish Catholics who'd been imprisoned by Moors during a battle in Spain. The story goes: "One day, a child appeared, dressed as a pilgrim of that period, carrying a basket of food and a gourd of water. The Moors allowed the child to bring food and water each day. The prisoners were fed, but the basket and gourd remained full. The child was not known to the Christians nor to the Moors, so the people concluded that the child Jesus, disguised as a pilgrim, had come to their rescue." This is why we see the Infant Jesus dressed in brimmed hat and cloak, with a pilgrim's staff in one hand and a basket in the other. Santo Nino de Atocha is the patron saint of those unjustly imprisoned. He also protects travelers and rescues people in danger. Again, please look carefully at all the photos, as there is extensive wear and damage. I find the print to be hauntingly beautiful, and the overall effect of this piece so harkens memories of the past, whether you saw something like this hanging in your grandma's or even great-grandparents' home, or perhaps you even have seen similar pieces in old churches or the very old haciendas of Mexico.
The print is about 8" wide by 10" tall (the actually opening of the frame is slightly bigger) and the frame measures about 12" wide by 14" tall. hanging is small at about 7" wide by 9-1/4" tall. Has original round brass hanger. Someone painted red on the back but that is not visible.

Returns & Refunds

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.
