La Madre Santisima de la Luz Decoupage on Distressed Wood Small Wall Hanging, Religious Decor
What an amazing piece to appear at this time--an artisan made wall hanging of the Virgen del la Luz, or Our Lady of the Light, made with a holy card of La Madre Santisima de la Luz, set inside a repousse tin frame. Why is this so important today? The story of the Virgen de la Luz goes back to a Jesuit priest named Father Giovanni Antonio Genovesi who was rector of a missionary college in Italy when in 1743 a fatal plague broke out. The college was turned into a hospital, and many students died of the plague, as did Father Genovesi. But in 1722 he wanted to have a painting of the Virgin Mary that he could take with him on his frequent travels to preach, so he went to a small village near Sicily to ask guidance from a pious woman who was known to have frequent visitations from the Virgin. Shortly after his request, the woman had a sighting from the Virgin Mary, and in vision the Virgin was surrounded by light, in her left arm the Child Christ, and around her were Seraphim angels. In the lady's vision, one angel lifted a basket of hearts to the Christ Child, and another angel lifted a soul from the depths of Hell. The Virgin Mary said she would like to be called "Maria Madre Santissima del Lume" or Mary Most Holy Mother of Light. The nameless lady described her vision to Father Genovesi, who then had a painter attempt to create the Virgin. The painting was not satisfactory, and there were several more visitations from the Virgin, and pleas from the father for the woman herself to describe to the painter the vision. The woman did not want to, out of modesty and obligations at home. She was struck with illness that then required her to be taken to the town where the painter lived, she recuperated, and in the studio with the painter she again was visited by the Virgin, but only she had the sighting. However, the Virgin told the lady that she would guide the painter's brush. And that depiction was what we now see reproduced in the holy card on this piece of art. Card and tin frame are attached to a thick piece of dark, distressed wood, with a leather hanger on the back. This piece can also bet set on a table, perhaps next to your computer or on a home altar, as the wood is thick enough to stand up. Such a great piece for anyone who loves religious art, and especially that created for everyday use. Hang on a small spot on a wall, or use in a home altar. Or, if you need some solace during troubled times, set somewhere that you work often and can look up and be reminded of the light in the world.
The piece measures 5-1/4" tall by 3-1/2" wide. Signed on the back by the artist (of the wood block, not the original depiction of the Virgin). That name appears to be Maria (Ma) Muriel F. The piece has a date, which looks to be 95, although it also looks like 45, so the piece could be from 1995 or 1945. Weighs about eight ounces.

Returns & Refunds

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.
Can you tell me SOLD prices?
We get correspondance almost daily asking how much certain items are worth or what the price was of items that have sold, and we can no longer respond to these messages.
