This gorgeous squash blossom necklace is made in one of my favorite styles--box bow--and with one of my favorite minerals, deep purple sugilite. "Sugilite is a rare purple cyclosilicate mineral that was named after the Japanese petrologist, Ken-ichi Sugi, who first identified it in 1944 in Iwagi Islet, Japan. However, this occurred as brownish-yellow grains that were not suitable for use as gemstones. A significant deposit of gem-quality material was later discovered in 1979 at a manganese mine in the Southern Kalahari Desert of South Africa. In 1980 sugilite was officially classified as a rare gem, which caused its price to increase. Since then, additional deposits have been discovered, but since these are small, it remains a rare gem. Sugilite gets its attractive purple color from traces of manganese. It can range in color from pinkish-purple to deep bluish-purple. A great deal of sugilite has patches, veins or layers, and attractive or interesting patterns are also desirable in sugilite gemstones." We can see the hand shaping of the sugilite stones. The necklace came to me via a fundraiser for a Southwestern university museum. The box bow style of squash blossom is one of the most recognizable, and was popular in the 1930s-1950s, although this necklace is newer, as the stone has only in the past 20 years come into more common usage in Native American jewelry. The name of the necklace form comes from the shape of the "blossoms" whereby the bezel and stone are set upon a bowtie shaped foundation with a little "box" (in this case oval shaped) in the center, where a single stone is usually placed--hence, box-bow. This necklace is strung on a double strand of silver beads that towards the end become single strand, and those beads are smaller than what you would find on many squash blossom necklaces.
The necklace measure 25″ long end to end. The naja is 2-1/4" wide by about 2" tall. The silver beads are small at about 3mm in diameter. The piece weighs 76g, and so we can tell by weight alone that this is a petite squash blossom. There are no markings. Using the JSP acid test, we confirm it is sterling silver. We believe it is Navajo made. In good condition with all stones well seated.
Although a petite piece, the necklace is well made and one-of-a-kind thanks to the combination of the box bow form and the sugilite stones.
