Taxco Sterling Silver Cross Pendant with Purple Amethyst Stone, Mexican Yalalag Jewelry Unisex
This vintage Taxco sterling silver cross pendant is large yet not overly heavy. It was made in Taxco, after 1979, which we know from the mark on the back, TR-10. The first letter tells us the city (Taxco) and the second letter is the first initial of the last name of the silversmith. And the number 10 tells us this was the 10th workshop registered in that city. So given how low that letter is, we can feel certain this silversmith was a well-established artist, and surely the design supports that otion. The cross has wonderful Etruscan style work, from the bail to the star patterns throughout including on each of the six dangling crosses and on the border around the amethyst stone. This style of cross is a blend between Jerusalem crosses, which is also known as the Crusaders Cross, and the Yalalag cross of Mexico. Typically the Jerusalem cross is a total of five total crosses--with a main center cross and four crosslets in the four corners. This particular cross actually has seven total crosses--the large center one and six dangling crosslets. This pendant would ideally be put onto a heavy sterling silver chain, and I have a few that I would recommend, including one that plays to those silver stars or buds. The leather twine onto which this cross is presently tied is super long, and I would recommend something much shorter so that the cross hits right at the center of the chest. It is such a gorgeous piece, and ideally would be worn at a level where it will be seen and admired. Let me know if you'd like to see the chain I have in mind for it and get a price quote. It is also the perfect size for a longer chain, which is why I'm leaving it on the leather piece on which it came to me--length is a personal preference and it's best to allow the buyer to determine what is right for herself or himself.
The cross measures 4" long including the bail, by just over 2" wide. On the leather twine it hangs to somewhere between 16-20" depending on whether you measure from the bail or from the bottom of the crosslets, and slightly less accounting for the width of the back of the neck. Total grams of silver is 23gm. Some small scratches on the back, but otherwise in good vintage condition.
