If paintings could tell a story, the story these two pieces would tell. Before I talk about who painted them, let me tell you how they came to be. The paintings started out, likely between 1910 and the 1920s, as a single Plein Air scene of the rolling hills of southern California, and specifically Los Angeles, I believe. The painting hung in an LA-area home, amidst the flowering foothills not unlike the setting depicted by the painting. The home caught fire, likely sometime between the 1920s and 1930s, and the painting was badly damaged. But the painting was so beloved that the sections unscathed were made into two smaller paintings, each with gorgeous gilt frames made to hold 8x16 canvases. Now about the painter: "James Merriam (1880-1951) was born in Chatham, Ontario, Canada on March 18, 1880. He studied art with Francis Petrus Paulis in Detroit. He worked there as a commercial artist before settling in Los Angeles in 1920. After establishing a studio, he made painting forays into the desert near Palm Springs, the redwoods, the high Sierra, Monterey, Yosemite, and Arizona. Merriam died in Los Angeles on September 8, 1951. He was the father of artist Eleanor Merriam Lukits. He is listed in Davenports, Hughes, Artnet, Askart, and more." Since the original owner of the painting felt strong enough about it to have the salvaged portions made into two paintings, I am selling the two paintings as a set. Together they are striking, and yet since they're discrete paintings, they could also be hung near one another, not necessarily side by side. They could be hung one atop the other, or even in the same room. Besides being striking pieces of art, they come with a most interesting backstory.
The paintings are on chipboard, and there is extensive crazing of the painted surface from age. The chipboard pieces each measure about 8" wide by 16" tall. The frames' outer dimensions are just under 13-1/2" wide by 21-1/2" tall. There are some chips and areas in the frame where the gilt and gesso have rubbed away. I show some of those issues in the close up photos. Special care will be taken in packing the paintings for transport.

• We ship within 1-3 days of order via USPS, Fed Ex, and UPS. and any order of $100 or more will be insured via third party insurance.
• Any package valued at $250 or more will require Signature upon delivery. Third Party insurer requires Signature in certain cases, so please do not ask that we ship without Signature as this creates a risk we are not willing to take.
• We accept returns. Per our policies, contact us within 14 days of delivery. Return shipping with insurance and tracking is at your expense. We process refunds once the item is returned in the same condition received.
• If your item arrives damaged, photograph it with packaging so we may make a claim.
• Returning an item is no fun; contact us before buying to ask questions or request additional photos. I'd rather talk you out of something vs your being disappointed with a purchase!

Note that layaways past due over 30 days go into default. Once in default the transaction is cancelled and layaway payments are not returnable due to having removed items from the market and losing potential sales.
