This piece is more stunning than photos can capture. First, it's from the 1800s, as dated by the 1865 coin but also the simple "SILVER" mark, which predates turn of the century silver marks and certainly Mexican marks required by the government in the 20th Century. Mexican jewelry from this era are often higher purity than sterling, but it is at least 925. The nested links are heavy--in curb style--and are all hand made, down to the unique clasp closure. In fact, you can see the file marks on the sides. And finally, the medallion, shaped like the size of a coin, has an image of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe on front and back, and on one side the Latin phrase "Non Fecit Taliter Omni Nationi" which means "He has not done thus for any other nation.” This verse from Psalm 147 can be found in many older churches in Mexico, displayed with the miraculous image of the Our Lady of Guadalupe, who is revered by people all over the world and especially those of Mexican heritage. The saint appeared before a indigenous worker, Juan Diego, on the morning of December 9, 1531. The saint asked for a church to be built at the Hill of Tepeyac, near Mexico City, in her honor. Diego recited the encounter with the Virgin Mary to the Spanish Archbishop of Mexico City, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, Despite Diego's miraculous meeting, Zumárraga instructed him to ask the Holy Mother for a sign to prove her identity. After first healing Diego's uncle, the Virgen de Guadalupe appeared again, this time instructing her loyal follower to collect flowers from the top of Tepeyac Hill. Confused, considering it was late December, Diego returned to the site Mary had first appeared to him not expecting to see any flowers. Although as he climbed he spotted Castilian roses, the Virgen de Guadalupe then arranged these in Diego's cloak. Diego then went to Zumárraga and opened his cloak, the Castilian roses fell to the floor, and imprinted on his personal tilma was the image of the Virgen de Guadalupe, and the day was December 12. The Virgen de Guadalupe is, simply, the sacred Mother Mary as she is best known by people of Mexico and surrounding areas. All in all, a one-of-a-kind antique piece made by hand and featuring the most beloved of Mexican saints.
The link bracelet measures just over 7" long including the clasp, and the links are about 3/4" wide. The medallion is a little over 1-1/4" in diameter and hangs from one of the last links. Some scratches on the silver from age but otherwise in good vintage condition.

Returns & Refunds

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market.
