Vintage Shrine to Our Lady of Zapopan Mexico, Catholic Altar Lamp, Mexican Folk Art Patron of Jalisco
This amazing shrine is devoted to Nuestra Señora de Zapopan, also known as Our Lady of Expectation, patron saint of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Zapopan is the eighth largest city in Mexico, located in the West Central part of the country, and is known for its 17th Century Franciscan sanctuary that holds a wooden statue of the Virgin that is considered a relic of medieval origin. It is said the statue came from Old Spain to New Spain (and what the part of Mexico that was called New Galicia) in the 16th century. Every year the Virgin is taken on a pilgrimage from Guadalajara Cathedral to the Basilica of Zapopan, with over a million people accompanying her on the procession. She is revered in this part of the world for the intercession she proffered between the indigenous peoples who resided in the area and the Spanish during battles in the 16th Century. It is said she convinced local people to lay down arms and convert to Catholicism. The shrine has glass in front and on the inside is a small figurine of painted plastic, I believe. On the back is glued a picture of the Holy Trinity, I believe. And behind the saint is a small light bulb that lights up the photo and back lights the Virgin. I had to replace the original bulb, and while doing so I cleaned the glass, which had likely not be cleaned on the inside since it was built, about 60-70 years ago. The photos of the shrine were taken prior to my cleaning, with the exception of the picture of the shrine lit up. One of the things that stands out about the piece is the balsa wood box or "home" for the shrine, which has repeating designs burned into the wood. It's just a beautiful example of religious folk art, meant to bring everyday spirituality into the home. In Mexico, it would have likely been placed onto a home altar with other saints and religious artifacts around it.
Measures 11" tall and has a 9-3/4" by 3-1/4" base. The bulb is replaceable should the current one burn out, and you can do that by gently pulling out the small nails, which are not completely sunken in. Openings in the bell towers allow heat to escape. Those bells do work.
A most beautiful small shrine--and ideal for the person who is from Guadalajara or other towns in Jalisco, Mexico.

Returns & Refunds
• We accept returns. Per our policies, contact us within 14 days of delivery. Return shipping with insurance and tracking is at your expense. We process refunds once the item is returned in the same condition received.

Do you do layaways?
We can work with you on a payment plan with immediate down payment up to two months for full payment.

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.
Can you tell me SOLD prices?
We get correspondance almost daily asking how much certain items are worth or what the price was of items that have sold, and we can no longer respond to these messages.
