Old Wood Carving of Native American Woman, Native American Indian Art, Southwestern Decor

This older carving is something of a mystery. It resembles early Hopi carvings. We do not know if it was carved by a Native American, but we do know that it is of a Native American woman carrying an infant. We don't believe the image is of a kachina per se, but we use the word to describe the style and tradition of carving. The figural doll has real hair stapled onto the head and made into a bun that is held into place with a dried and cracked rubber band. Rubber bands were invented in 1845, and we believe the carving is likely from the 1930s to 1950s, although possibly earlier. The wood is lightweight cottonwood, sourced in the Southwest, likely along the Rio Grande bosque area. The two pieces of turquoise representing earrings appear to be real, and the necklace is made of red pony beads, which are a large seed beads and part of Native American bead work since the 1600s, although again, we don't know the age of these particular ones. The necklace pendant is a piece of carved and painted wood. The belt is also painted on with thick silver paint and green dots to represent the turquoise. It's a very interesting piece of older outsider art, again, possibly created by a Native American yet possibly not. The wood does have cracks from age.
The carving measures 12-3/4" tall by just over 3" wide and 2-3/4" deep. The feet are nailed into the bottom and a small piece of wood of equal height to stabilize the figure. The hair is somewhat messy and the yarn headband a bit loose. Again, carcks in the wood. Stable condition.

Returns & Refunds
• We accept returns. Per our policies, contact us within 14 days of delivery. Return shipping with insurance and tracking is at your expense. We process refunds once the item is returned in the same condition received.
• If your item arrives damaged, photograph it with packaging so we may make a claim.
• Returning an item is no fun; contact us before buying to ask questions or request additional photos. I'd rather talk you out of something vs your being disappointed with a purchase!

Do you do layaways?
We can work with you on a payment plan with immediate down payment up to two months for full payment.
Note that layaways past due over 30 days go into default. Once in default the transaction is cancelled and layaway payments are not returnable due to having removed items from the market and losing potential sales.

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.
