Sorry, this item has sold.

Here we have a fabulous older piece of redware pottery from Oaxaca, Mexico, circa 1950s to 60s, which is in the genre of pottery that is called drip ware. This particular piece shares the colors of drip ware--traditional blue, green, purple, rust, and yellow over a creamy beige background. These designs were painted on, albeit not as finely as what you might see with other Mexican pottery. This type of ceramics was tourist pottery, although this particular pattern is less common that other pieces, such as what what produced in Tlaquepaque and elsewhere. I like to think that I rescued this piece, as it had been used by an elderly woman as a plate for a potted plant. Fortunately she was not a prolific gardener, and so the plant had long ago dried out, and the glaze was not completely eroded, as these plates will do from moisture. This plate was, however, covered in old dried dirt, some of which seems to have been ground into the glaze. And there are several areas where the glaze and paint have chipped away, and I provide a couple of examples of these in Photo 5. Still, it is in remarkable condition given the age, and it has a beautiful vintage patina. On the back it says Mexico.

The plate measures about 12-1/2" in diameter and about 1" tall. I would not immerse the piece in water, as old redware clay is particular susceptible to erosion from water. The biggest issue are the relatively small areas where the glaze has flaked away, including some surface paint/glaze chips along the rim. Otherwise in sound vintage condition.

Beautiful piece reminiscent of Old, Old Mexico.
