Heavy vintage ceramic tile, rustic home decor, blue green, Mexican tile, ceramics and pottery, Mexican pottery, farmhouse decor, bohemian

$88.00

Here we have a very heavy and very lovely old floor tile, dated on the back in the lightest of writing, 1959. This piece came from the estate of a couple who collected beautiful pieces from around the world, and who used some of the tiles in their home to make mosaics on old iron tables. I am kicking myself for not buying more, but this one in particular called to me, as it has the feel of an old Italian tile, or French, or of course Mexican. And they are all related, Majolica is thought to have come from the name of the Island Majorca, where Moorish potters learned from Italians in Sicily. Every country over time made the designs their own, and of course when the Spanish came to the Americas, they brought the traditions with them. So it really could have come from any of those places, and so I think of it as an Old World art form. Great for so many decors--yes, bohemian and rustic, but also to add color and texture to modern or industrial. Use as a hot plate, or set up on a small easel, or a stepping stone in your garden. Just know that with the clay base, it will deteriorate further over time when exposed to moisture. Already there is quite a bit of chipping of the paint and glaze from the surface, and plenty of chips and knicks, which I've tried to capture in the photos.

Measures 12-1/4" square by 3/4" thick. Please see photos for wear and condition. This is not a mint, pristine tile from the 1950s. Like most terracotta pieces, it has much wear, all of which in my opinion make it more authentic and rustic and beautiful.

Old World beauty!
