Vintage 10" Moorish pottery bowl hand painted blues yellows decorative wall hanging

Sorry, this item has sold.

In the 1980s I lived for a year in Granada, in Southern Spain, site of the Alhambra and center of a most vibrant and beautiful section called the Albaicin. This part of Spain more than any other represents the influence and mixture of Islamic and Spanish cultures, where the Moors came up into Spain in the 700s A.D. and lived for centuries. And so of course when I saw this heavy earthenware bowl, I immediately recognized it as a Moroccan piece. Circa 1970s to 80s, the bowl is signed on the back by the artist (initials R.A.) and in Arabic says the name of the city in Morocco from which it comes--Fez. Beautiful traditional design, with traditional blue and white and golden yellow colors, along with a bit of teal and rust. The piece has a thick foot or pedestal. There are some condition issues--paint flakes and even some that occurred in firing, most of which the previous owner painted over to try to hide. Even with those flaws, the piece is incredibly beautiful, and you will want to take advantage of the holes in the back for twine to hang on the wall where all can enjoy.

The bowl measures 10" in diameter and just about 2-3/4" tall. See Photos 5-8 for close ups of areas where the paint has rubbed off, one area where bubbles created a uneven surface in the glazing process, and areas on the rim areas where the paint and glaze have flaked off. The foot has some small divots and chips. No cracks. Bowl weighs 2.5 lbs unpacked and will be double boxed for shipping.

Pottery making so beautiful that it is truly a piece of art.
