Pair of 1960s wood wall art Queen Isabella King Ferdinand of Spain, Spanish decor, Spanish wood carvings, Spanish Revival, rustic home decor

Here we have a pair of carved wood wall hangings, circa 1960s to early 70s, of the King and Queen of Spain who sponsored Christoper Columbus (Cristobal Colon) and changed the destiny of the "New World." I purchased these from the original owner who told me she hand-carried them on the plane from her first and only trip to Spain. I lived in Spain in the 1980s and was immediately drawn to the pieces, which are big and carved in a rough, almost chunky way. I attribute the style to Brutalist influences from that era. The figures carry a sheen that could only come from age and natural wear from touch. Although the owner had long forgotten the specifics of her purchase, we both agreed that these carvings represented Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, who financed Christopher Columbus' trip to the New World. Notice that Queen Isabella is larger and more forbearing as compared to the king--a depiction consistent with the power this queen wielded during that epoch. What an incredible treasure!

The queen measures 24" (2 feet) tall by about 4-1/4" wide; the king is 22-1/4" tall by about 4" wide. Both are about 2" thick. Each has areas where the wood has flaked off, and both have lived in the dry New Mexico air for decades and have been conditioned. Both are in good vintage condition, able to hang and enjoy for years to come.

For the Hispanophile, the person intrigued by Spanish Colonial history in the New World, or in love with Spanish Revival hacienda decor.
