Large Native American turquoise bracelet by Navajo Jerry Roan Vintage Turquoise Jewelry

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is a large cuff--not so much the size of the shank--but rather the face of the bracelet, which features five cabochons of natural Kingman turquoise nuggets. From a website about this type of turquoise: "[Kingman Mine] is known for producing bright blue stones with white and black matrix, considered by many to be the best turquoise in North America." Natural chunks like these are stablized using a method developed by the mine owners decades ago, and the result is very stable natural turquoise that shows off the stone "as is" with black matrix. The five cabs are set in sawtooth bezels, each set off by chunky raindrops scaled large like the turquoise chunks they separate. The piece was likely made in the 1970s or 80s--the era of big cuffs--and carries Navajo Johnson Ralph's hallmark, and a STERLING stamp.

The cuff shank itself is not large, measuring about 5-1/8" around using a tape measure on the inner side, with a 1-3/8" gap--so a total of about 6-1/2", which is perfect for a medium-small size wrist. The piece fits my own 6" wrist further up the forearm, and something about how the cuff is made, wider versus rounder, makes it too big for the lower part of my wrist. Yet the face of the bracelet is large--a bit over 1" wide, and to get a sense of the size I've included a photo of it next to a dainty row bracelet in Photo 5. The cabs range in size from about 3/8" by 1/2" for the smallest to 1/2" by 3/4" for the largest. The cuff has a lovely patina, and especially underneath you can see where the patina has not been at all polished and shows the age of the piece.

A great cuff for the person who lives large.
