Zuni Knife Wing Pendant Brooch Salmon Colored Coral, Attr. Juan de Dios, 56g

This amazing pendant-slash-pin features the iconic Knife Wing, and it is attributed to one of the most iconic Zuni silversmiths of all time, Juan de Dios (1882-1944). The Kennedy Museum of Art carries a bolo tie hallmarked by de Dios with this same design, and there are a handful of similar pendants also in this design, and like this one are unsigned by de Dios yet carry what appear to be C. G. Wallace trading post codes. Juan de Dios worked with C.G. Wallace and is said to have been one of the first Native American artists--along with Horace Iule--to use the Knife Wing form in jewelry. While there are other at least a couple of pendants in this design on the market, also attributed to de Dios, note that what makes this one stand out is the use of salmon-colored coral. In fact, I've taken several photos of the piece in direct and indirect sunlight, and in all cases, the photos tend to darken the color more so than it is in person. Still, even in the photos on this listing, it is evident that the coral is not a deep red color, and given the timeframe in which de Dios was making jewelry, this light-colored coral--possibly from Italy--would have been available. Juan de Dios was one of the first Zuni silversmiths to hallmark his work, with JD, which was rare given that he died well before most other silversmiths were using hallmarks; some pieces he did not hallmark, however. This piece does NOT carry the de Dios' hallmark, which is why I say it was attributed to him, based on the design. Also, letters etched into the back, this case read EZUZ, are also found on the other pieces attributed to de Dios. Do note that the shepherd's hook on the back makes this a versatile piece for hooking over a chain or Navajo Pearls necklace, as shown in some of the photos. No chain is included. The piece is not marked yet tests positive for sterling silver.
The piece measures 3-1/4" across wing tip to wing tip by about 3-1/2" tall. It weighs a substantial 56g.

Returns & Refunds
• We accept returns. Per our policies, contact us within 14 days of delivery. Return shipping with insurance and tracking is at your expense. We process refunds once the item is returned in the same condition received.

Do you do layaways?
We can work with you on a payment plan with immediate down payment up to two months for full payment.

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.
