Vintage US Silver Coin Necklace Approx 19" HEAVY 448g, Varying Coins incl. 1922 Peace Dollars

I love U.S. coin jewelry--an early notion of reuse and upcycling. And here we have a gorgeous and oh-so-heavy shortish necklace made with a variety of important old U.S. coins. First, let me just say that the necklace is meant to be worn high on the neck, and although it is not truly choker length, because the beads, each made with two coins domed and soldered together, end up being so big in diameter, the necklace sits higher on the chest than one might expect. This to me is like a 1980s version of big beaded necklaces, and the beads happen to have been made with old U.S. coins. And the person who made this necklace was genius, in that they used the different types of coins and their varying years minted to create a graduated style. At the very bottom are the three largest, all the 1922 Peace Dollar (and do note that it's hard to read the dates, as these coins are worn down!), minted to commemorate the end of WWI. The next eight (four on either side) are the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, and although I can't read the date on every one, I did see a 1939 and a 1944. The next eight (four on either side) are almost impossible to read, but I can make out the date of 1899 on one and the words "Quarter Dollar"--these may all be the Barber Silver Quarter, named for designer Charles E. Barber. Finally, the necklace is finished off with four benchmade beads, also in graduated sizes, two on each side. Coin beads are made using a centuries-old Navajo technique. The artist starts with two flat coins, which are molded into domed shapes and soldered together. At least one of the large beads displays a slight gap in the seam between the two coins. The necklace is finished off with thick hook and eye--the weight requires a jumbo clasp, and the style of the clasp leads me to believe it was put together in the 1980s (as does the style of the necklace altogether). The coins are strung on foxtail, which like the clasp is required for the weight of the beads.
The necklace measures about 19" from end to end, including the clasps, and that does includes some stretch; it likely started out as a 18" necklace. Weighs an amazing 448g! This may be in the top five heaviest necklaces I've offered over the past ten years. The silver is tarnished in places, and the best way to brighten the patina is by wearing it next to your skin. I would not use silver polishing cream.

Do you do layaways?

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you.
