Old U.S. Coin Squash Blossom Necklace of 1920s Liberty Dollars 1930s Mercury Dimes 419g

This vintage Navajo squash blossom necklace is HEAVY and features the most interesting coins I've come across in old U.S. coin jewelry. Six U.S. Liberty Dollars--three on each side--form the "blossoms." One is from 1922, four from 1923, and one from 1924. The Liberty Dollar from those years commemorate the end of World War I and, thus, is also known as the Peace Dollar. In 1921, the U.S. Mint produced the Morgan Dollar, although at that time there was pressure to strike a coin symbolic of the peace reached after the war. In December 1921, then Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon approved the design of the Peace Dollar, minted in 1921-1928 and again in 1934-1935. Anthony de Francisci won the competition for the design; on one side is Goddess Liberty, and the other features the iconic bald eagle with olive branch and the word “PEACE” along the bottom. The use of Peace Dollars alone makes this squash blossom necklace special, although the rest of the necklace is remarkable as well. The beads are formed with Winged Liberty Head Dimes that appear to mostly be from the 1930s. The dimes show the allegorical figure of Lady Liberty, wearing a cap, and the designer of that coin added wings to the cap to symbolize "liberty of thought." People mistook Liberty for the Roman god Mercury, which is how these coins also became known as Mercury Dimes. Each bead is comprised of two dimes hammered into hemispheres then soldered together and drilled. The beads alone are weighty and when 48 total--24 up each side--are added, the piece is heavier than even the heaviest of squash blossom necklaces. Possibly because of the incredible weight of all the coins, the naja is on the small side, adorned with a single turquoise stone at the top; it also could be that this small and simple style is a nod to naja designs of the early 20th Century, in keeping with the date of the coins. The necklace overall was made circa 1960s to 1970s, during a timeframe when old U.S. coin jewelry was popular. While the weight of this piece makes it challenging to wear for long periods, old U.S. coin jewelry--especially squash blossom necklaces--have become increasingly collectible and it is not uncommon to see them displayed on walls as art, inside shadowboxes or even just as is. This necklace, with coins made to commemorate a significant historical event, is now itself historically important.
Measuring end-to-end, the necklace is about 24-1/2" long and weighs a whopping 419g. The naja measures about 1-7/8" wide by about 1-3/4" long not including the bale. The necklace is strong on foxtail, and the previous owner stored it flat, so there is relatively little stretch. One condition issue to point out is that at least one bead has lost solder material and now shows a gap in the seam between dimes. The bead is still soldered on about two-thirds of its surface.
