Vintage bolo tie by Navajo Tommy Singer silver overlay spiny oyster, Native American Indian, Men's bolo necklace, boyfriend gift for Father

Sorry, this item has sold.

This beautiful silver overlay bolo is made by renowned Navajo silversmith Tommy Singer. Singer's works carry several hallmarks, one being the unmistakable cursive T. Singer seen on the back of this bolo. And what a collectible piece this is! Geometric symbols carved into a substantial sterling silver disc with oxidation to better contrast the design, all punctuated by a beautiful spiny oyster cabochon.

Tommy Singer was born in 1940, died in 2014. From Wikipedia: "Singer was a member of the Navajo Nation from Winslow, Arizona. He perfected his craft working on the Navajo reservation in a small studio surrounded with his family and other tribal members. He grew up on the Navajo Reservation and was taught silversmithing by his father, beginning at the age of seven. In the 1960s he invented the "chip-inlay" technique of using turquoise or coral chips in this silverwork. This technique has become widespread in his community. He also used stamps and work in overlay. When asked about his work, Singer said,'Every piece is made with the various meanings from my traditional ways - the Navajo way of living. My father was a silversmith, too. He taught me, and wanted me to continue this trade. It was my father's dream that I learn to silversmith so that I could continue his beliefs'."

The silver bolo measures 1-3/4" tall by 1-1/4" wide. The spiny oyster cabochon is about 1/2" long by 3/8" wide. The back is tarnished in spots--without taking off the slider, it is hard to truly clean it. However, you can still clearly see the artist's T. Singer hallmark.

An unusual Modernist piece by a highly collectible artist.
