Vintage Natural Blue Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace 26", Likely Morenci, 207g Circa 1960s

$2,600.00

This vintage Native American squash blossom necklace is standout, with stunning natural blue turquoise, which displays luminescent blue colors that range from sky to creamy to robin's egg--all much more vivid and deep than photos can capture. That color variation is one of the characteristics of natural turquoise, and some of the stones are even more blue-green than true blue. Although not super visible in photos, the dark areas of matrix actually shimmer with gold and iron-colored flecks when viewed through a jeweler's loupe. Such matrix within these tones of blue is the hallmark of turquoise from the Morenci mine, and it appears that the turquoise in this necklace is from that long-closed mine in Southern Arizona. Most people will recognize Morenci for the silver-toned matrix, but the golden flecked stones are rare. From a website about this highly collectible turquoise: "The Morenci Turquoise mine was famous for its beautiful true-blue Turquoise. The mine is also famous for its beautiful Pyrite matrix which is one of the fingerprints of the mine. Nothing is more beautiful than sky blue Turquoise with silver colored iron pyrite matrix, or the rare golden pyrite matrix in natural Morenci Turquoise." This squash blossom necklace contains 15 stones in total--six up each side in horizontal teardrop-shaped silver "squash blossoms," which are not blossoms at all but function as they would. Five more teardrop-shaped backplates with gorgeous turquoise form the "naja" at the bottom. The Morenci mine was active from the mid 1950s to the early 80s, when lease owner William "Lucky" Brown retired, then continued a bit longer until the lease expired. The form on this squash blossom necklace might remind you of Zuni bracelets made up of these teardrop-shaped silver backplates with raised border, connected and oxidized around the bezel. In fact, I believe this piece is Zuni made, given the resemblance to that familiar form, which was especially popular in the 1950s and 60s. I suspect this piece was made in the 1960s to early 70s, before super big squash blossom necklaces became popular. The necklace is not overly big, except in the best way, which is the generous cut of the stones, some slightly domed. But, again, the size is manageable--large enough to be noticed yet comfortable enough to wear for hours at a time. The piece is unsigned, as was the norm for pieces from that era.

The necklace measures about 26" total end to end, which is a standard size for this form of necklace. The naja measures about 3" wide by just under 3-1/2" tall. Given that extra length of the naja, the hang length is about 13" to 14", depending on the girth of one's neck. Weighs a substantial 207g. This piece has a beautiful patina and is in excellent condition.

Incredible, luminescent, special.

    Do you do layaways?

We can work with you on a payment plan with immediate down payment up to two months for full payment.

    Do you accept offers?

Please, no offers. We receive so much correspondence daily that we are unable to respond to offer requests.

Will you reserve or hold items?

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.

Can you tell me SOLD prices?

We get correspondance almost daily asking how much certain items are worth or what the price was of items that have sold, and we can no longer respond to these messages.
