Fred Harvey era bracelets are all wonderful and collectible, and this one even more so for the fact that it features three green Cerrillos turquoise stones from New Mexico. The stones on each side of the center are cracked, not uncommon for jewelry that is nearing 100 years in age and was well worn through those decades, although these are old cracks with nothing loose or at risk of falling out. The center stone has matrix lines that rise to the surface. Fred Harvey era jewelry came onto the scene between 1900 to the mid 20th Century, named for the man whose company helped popularize the Southwest among Eastern U.S residents by advertising Native American arts and culture in Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway calendars and publications. Fred Harvey Hotel gift shops were stocked with this jewelry, almost always made by Navajo and Zuni silversmiths for tourists, thus in a lighter and thus more affordable style. Some of the jewelry was very affordable, trinkets for curio shops ; this bracelet, being made of sterling silver--unmarked but tested--would have been available in a more high-end gift shop or gallery. Cerrillos turquoise is one of the earliest seen in vintage Southwestern jewelry and one of the most recognizable. From a website about the mine: "Mount Chalchihuitl (the mountain in the Cerrillos Mining Disrict) is the site of the largest known prehistoric mining operation and the largest single deposit of turquoise ever found in North America. Native American cultures extensively worked the slopes of Mount Chalchihuitl and Turquoise Hill as early as A.D. 900. From the surface pits and short tunnels and shallow shafts, they recovered large quantities of beautifully colored turquoise stone. Because the prehistoric miners were limited to the use of stone tools, the extent of their mining is remarkable. As a trading commodity, the turquoise from Mount Chalchihuitl found its way throughout the southwest and to Canada and Mexico. After 1300 A.D., members of the nearby San Marcos Pueblo mined and controlled the turquoise deposits. According to legend, Spanish explorer Francisco Coronado sent specimens of Cerrillos turquoise to Spain in 1541 to join the crown jewel collection. And according to other undocumented legends, the Spanish later exploited the mines supposedly using Indian slave labor. These events triggered the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Pueblo Indians continued to mine the Mount Chalchihuitl and Turquoise Hill deposits until the early 1870’s, when a silver strike attracted an influx of miners who opened a new chapter in the Cerrillos turquoise story. Most miners worked the district’s silver-lead-zinc-gold ores, but others were drawn to the old Indian turquoise mines. Modern mining operations began at Turquoise Hill in 1875 and at Mount Chalchihuitl a decade later. The turquoise occurred as nodules, seams and veins. During the 1880’s, veins as thick as 3 inches were not uncommon. Cerrillos turquoise colors vary considerably; from pure sky blue to blue greens and greens with little blue at all." Obviously, the turquoise in this bracelet is all green, and a deep foresty green at that. Other notable aspects of the bracelet include an unusual Zia symbol stamp on each side and a very small thunderbird stamp at the terminals, which makes this fun to look at even when you turn over your wrist. Although it displays the relatively thin shank that is characteristic of Fred Harvey cuffs, the weight is solid. The patina displays in both the warmth of the silver as well as the softness of edges. The bracelet was made in the first half of the 20th century, circa 1930s to 1940s.
The bracelet measures about 5-3/8" around using a tape measure on the inside, with a just under 1" gap--so just under 6-3/8" total. The width is just under 1" across the center setting and narrowing to 3/8" at the terminals. Weighs 30g.
Highly collectible era and turquoise!
