103g Vintage Navajo Pearl Necklace 19" Made with Eagle Side Up 900 Silver Washington Quarters
I love U.S. Coin jewelry--an early notion of reuse and upcycling. And here we have an unusual Navajo Pearl necklace, the bottom section made with seven large beads, each side comprised of a "Washington Quarter." From a website about this coin: they were minted "to commemorate the 200th anniversary of our first president's birth. The United States Mint first issued the Washington quarter dollar in 1932. The mint produced almost 5.5 million at the Philadelphia mint, while the Denver mint only produced 436,800 of them. This was because the United States was in the middle of the Great Depression, and demand for coinage was very low." Most US residents will recognize the imagery on this quarter, as it is basically the same quarter that is used today. Each of the quarter beads is made with two coins. The artist placed the eagle side up on both, and the president side facing inward and not visible. Fourteen total quarters were used--two each per bead--and ten of those have a very tiny "D" below the wreath where the eagle perches (see Photo 3 for a couple of quarters with the tiny "D"). That "D" tells us those quarters were from the 1932 Denver mint, the one that produced a limited number of quarters due to being in the midst of the Great Depression. The other four quarters might have also been from 1932 but the Philadelphia mint, or they may have dated up til 1964, when the Washington quarter went from being 90% silver content to a copper alloy. The necklace came to me from the estate of a woman whose parents spent a good deal of time in New Mexico in the 1950s through 1980s. She believes the necklace was purchased in the 1970s in Santa Fe. The necklace is Navajo made, and the way we know this when looking at US coin jewelry is that even though the eagle side has no date, it is the eagle imagery, and not the date side, that is displayed. Coin jewelry made by and for Navajos will almost never show the date side, as it is truly the bird that is sacred, as explained here: "Atsá (eagle) is sacred in Diné (Navajo) culture. The most important of the birds, the eagle is revered as a predator and the symbol of a warrior. Because of its spiritual power, the eagle is associated with many ceremonies, including the Eagle Way, a major healing ceremony." In addition to the seven large beads comprised of two quarters each, there are small, fluted beads separating the quarters plus regular smaller benchmade beads going up the sides. The necklace is finished off with hook and eye.
The necklace measures about 19" from end to end. Weighs 103g--a substantial weight, which is not surprising given the silver content of the 14 quarters. There is some stretch in the fox tail chain onto which the beads are strung. Otherwise in excellent condition. Because of the weight of the quarter beads, I recommend storing this lying flat versus hanging. But do stretch out the beads so that the chain stays fluid and unkinked.

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.
Can you tell me SOLD prices?
We get correspondance almost daily asking how much certain items are worth or what the price was of items that have sold, and we can no longer respond to these messages.
