This 18" five-strand necklace was made by renowned Santo Domingo heishi maker Tony Aguilar Sr. (1919-2002). From a biography about this master jeweler: "Tony Aguilar's life certainly influenced his jewelry. He was born in 1919 at Santo Domingo. From a family of jewelers including his own father and his uncle, Vidal Aragon, Tony Aguilar learned silversmithing from a Navajo jeweler while he attended the Santa Fe Indian School. The president of his class at the Indian School, Tony entered the United States Army during World War II. For 2 1/2 years, Tony Aguilar was stationed in Iran, and while there he admired the heavy, ornate jewelry designs of Middle Eastern jewelry. Tony would return to the United States highly influenced by those jewelry designs. The resulting jewelry that Tony Aguilar created post World War II was often bold, big and brass with intricate stampwork and large natural turquoise stones. Tony's frequent use of brass was quite exceptional, for brass is actually very difficult to work with and very few jewelers can create brass jewelry that does the metal any justice. Tony Aguilar was one of the few who could. His brass work is some of the best around!" This piece came to me from an old New Mexico estate--the couple were an anthropologist and a historian who together gathered one of the most outstanding collections of Native American treasures, almost all from the 1930s to the 1970s. This piece circa 1950s. Creating heishi beads as these is quite challenging. From the Santa Fe Collectors Guide: "A string of good heishi will have a uniform consistency. If you gently pull it through your hand, it should feel like a single serpent-like piece." It may look like it's done by a machine, but: "The truth is, if it seems exquisitely perfect, it was most likely made by the hands of a highly-skilled, extremely patient craftsperson." One of the brass cones carries what we can see as the remnant of Aguilar Sr.'s hallmark, now almost rubbed away from wear. I have another piece by Aguilar Sr. from the same estate.

The turquoise strands measure about 18", including cones and hooks. The heishi beads vary in size but are about 3mm in diameter by 3-5mm long. The strands are meant to intertwine so are slightly varying lengths. Weighs 33g. The heishi beads may have some small divots but are in very good vintage condition. I don't detect any broken pieces, although with this many I can't be certain there are none.

    Returns & Refunds

    • We accept returns. Per our policies, contact us within 14 days of delivery. Return shipping with insurance and tracking is at your expense. We process refunds once the item is returned in the same condition received.

    • If your item arrives damaged, photograph it with packaging so we may make a claim.

    We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.

    Can you tell me SOLD prices?

    We get correspondance almost daily asking how much certain items are worth or what the price was of items that have sold, and we can no longer respond to these messages.
