This 1992 brooch pin is perfect for the person who loves Native American artifacts, including pottery shards. The brooch features an ancient Anasazi Shard framed in sterling silver. Juxtaposed behind that is a replica cliff art petroglyph that some believe may have depicted the Supernova 1054 AD. About the original cliff art upon which this is based: "A pictograph, associated with the Ancestral Puebloan culture found in Chaco Canyon, may depict a supernova that was first observed on 4 July 1054 A.D. The remnant of this supernova, which consists of debris ejected during the explosion, is known as the Crab Nebula and is located in the constellation Taurus. The supernova was visible in broad daylight, having reached a maximum brightness about ten times that of Venus, the brightest astronomical object visible from Earth besides the Sun and Moon. It remained visible by day for 23 days, and by night for 653 days. Supernova pictograph panel contains three symbols: a large star (supernova), a crescent moon, and a hand print. The pictograph was painted on a horizontal overhang six meters off the ground, located on an East-facing cliff face five hundred meters Northeast of the ruin Peñnasco Blanco. Strong circumstantial evidence points to the pictograph being a depiction of the supernova. The crescent is the moon, the star shape to the left the supernova, and a life-size hand print is taken to indicate that the site is sacred. Calculations of the Moon's orbit back to 5 July 1054 have shown that the moon was waning, just entering first quarter. These calculations also indicate that at dawn on 5 July 1054 in the American Southwest, the moon was within 3 degrees of the supernova, and its crescent oriented as on the pictograph (provided the pictograph is viewed looking up with one's back to the cliff, as the authors of the pictograph most likely did). With the apparent width of the moon being about half a degree, this pictograph comes basically as close as it possibly could to being a true scale rendition of the 1054 supernova seen in conjunction with the waning moon." And about the Anasazi shard: "Anasazi pottery is distinguished from that of other Southwestern culture areas by its predominant colors (gray, white, and black), ...Pottery occurs as early as A.D. 200 in the Anasazi region, and most of this pottery appears to have been made of floodplain or soil clays. These alluvial clays are often usable as they come from the ground, and the high iron content of the clay resulted in a brown surface color. An open fire on the ground surface would have proved adequate for firing. The best known of these early pottery sites are in the Petrified Forest National Park and the Navajo Reservoir area of northern New Mexico, where a crumbly brown ware is present on sites dating within the A.D. 200-500 period." The brooch has etched the words ANASAZI PETROGLYPH SUPERNOVA 1054 AD SHARD and also has etched the word STERLING and what appears to be the artist's signature and the year made, 1992. I have not been able to identify who the artist was; could have been a Native American or non-Native Southwestern artist.

The brooch is essentially three-sided, with the longest side being 2-1/4", the next longest is 1-3/4" long, and the shortest is about 1-5/8". Weighs 18g. The piece can be worn in whichever direction is most pleasing to the wearer.

One-of-a-kind brooch for the lover of the Southwest.

    Do you do layaways?

We can work with you on a payment plan with immediate down payment up to two months for full payment.

Note that layaways past due over 30 days go into default. Once in default the transaction is cancelled and layaway payments are not returnable due to having removed items from the market and losing potential sales.

Convo to talk about a layaway plan that works for your budget.

    Do you accept offers?

Please, no offers. We receive so much correspondence daily that we are unable to respond to offer requests.

We have loyal customers who return again and again and use the repeat customer discount coupon for 10% off. We set fair prices from the get-go. If something is expensive, you know it's good.

We do run sales occasionally, so watch for those. And we value community. Whether you are a returning customer, Facebook friend, or Instagram follower--our thanks to you is 10% off for supporting this shop. Please go to the About section of the main shop page and click on the social media links. Follow us on one of those platforms, convo to say you've done so and we'll send you the coupon code for 10% off.

Will you reserve or hold items?

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.

Can you tell me SOLD prices?

We get correspondance almost daily asking how much certain items are worth or what the price was of items that have sold, and we can no longer respond to these messages.
