Here we have a pair of simple milagro earrings made with silver-plated pig charm. These came to me from an old New Mexico estate; they are made with older milagros from Mexico. The word "milagros" means "miracles" in Spanish and refers to small metal religious charms. In Mexico, milagros are used as a matter of faith where a person will ask a favor a saint, and then, in order to repay the saint after the favor has been granted, make a pilgrimage to the shrine of that saint, and take a milagro and leave it there. These milagros are typically pinned to some object of devotion in the shrine, and often a small prayer of thanks is added, written of a piece of paper. People also might carry a milagro with them in order to get its benefit. For instance, a curandera (spiritual healer) might bless a milagro and recommend that the person carry it in her pocketbook or on her person, in order to cure a physical ailment or to ward off evil, or bring about a change of fortune. If you have an ailment in your foot, you might carry a foot milagro. And milagros are so beautifully charming that they have become small folk art pieces in their own right. The milagros here of a pig might be used to help keep your livestock safe, or be for a blessing to provide for your family, as pigs have an association with prosperity and are one of the most common types of meat eaten in Mexico, even moreso than cows. I love the idea of giving the pigs as a gift to that favorite pig-headed woman in your family or friend circle.
Each measures about 1-1/8" wide by 3/4" long and dangle closer to 1-3/8" long. Together weigh 6g or 3g each. I did acid test these just to make sure they were not pure sterling silver, which they are NOT.
Because pigs are one of nature's most intelligent animals, squeal with laughter, and always get what they want!
