This Fred Harvey Era ring was made circa 1910s to 1930s and stands out for the use of jade--in lieu of turquoise--as the featured gemstone. As you may know, jade has a rich history of use in jewelry of the Southwest. The Toltec civilization of what is now Mexico began in around 900 AD, using turquoise and other gemstones in jewelry, art, and religious objects. The most prized gemstone of the Toltec people was jade, which was viewed as a gift from the gods to the Toltec people. Twentieth Century jewelry making drew on much of the historical use of gemstones and icons, and while jade is much less common than turquoise in Fred Harvey Era jewelry and Southwestern and Native American jewelry in general, it is not unheard of. Like most jade jewelry, the stone in this ring is slightly translucent with occlusions, including what looks almost like a large crack under the surface. This is not a crack but rather the formation of the mineral. We can see on the back of the silver foundation that the ring was formed with melted ingot silver, as it has telltale wrinkles. Fred Harvey Era jewelry often has STERLING stamps, especially after 1932 and much more commonly by the 1950s; this ring has no stamps, and it uses wtist wire as part of the shank, another sign of older jewelry.
The ring is Size 5. Ring face measures just over 5/8" wide by about 1-3/4" long. The jade stone isjust under 1/2" wide by 1-1/2" long. Weighs 15g. The stone is well seated.
This ring can be re-sized for an additional $25, as long as you know your ring size. The back side of the ring will not be exactly replicated but it will loosely match the current back side.
