This Fred Harvey Era bracelet comes from the estate of a Taos collector. You can see in Photo 5 more pieces from this estate, just to get a sense of the breadth and quality. I estimate this piece to be circa 1920s to 1930s. "Fred Harvey Era" applies to jewelry that has a certain look common to the era--from about 1900 to the mid 20th Century--during which the Fred Harvey Company popularized the Southwest and promoted travel to the Southwest. This was done by featuring Native American arts and culture in Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway calendars and publications. The company had a network of Fred Harvey Hotels, the gift shops of which were stocked with jewelry catering to the tourists. There are many trading posts and jewelry manufacturers that operated during this time--companies like Bell Trading--and their jewelry is also considered to be "Fred Harvey Era." These companies mostly employed Navajo and Zuni silversmiths to make the jewelry based on traditional designs. However, since they are not signed by Native Americans, we call them Southwestern style. The reason we know this particular piece is older is because of the softness in the silver--it has what we call "hand patina." The jewelry in the estate is mostly within the range of 1930s Depression Era to 1970s, although there are a few pieces, like this, that could be even earlier. It's stand out not only for the age but also a highly polished stone. The stone is has a milky gray background with rusty red streaks or splotches. We believe it is moss agate, although the use of petrified wood was also quite common. There are some scratches in the cabochon but it has no cracks nor divots. It's really quite exceptional.
The widest point across the top is just under 1-3/8" wide and taking a soft tape measure along the inside, the length is 5-5/8" plus a 7/8" gap or a total of 6-1/2". The shank is no longer symmetrical--possibly having been squeezed or just from wear. I would not recommend trying to squeeze the bracelet tighter as doing so would compromise the shank and possibly cause it to break. Beautiful patina on the piece.
Uncommon and authentic piece of the Old Southwest!

Yes, we can work with you on a payment plan with immediate down payment. We generally do 30-day plans of two payments, but for more expensive items we can do a 60- or 90-day plan. We follow the Etsy recommended approach of having you purchase an item using Other as a payment option, then invoicing you via PayPal per the payment schedule upon which we mutually agree.
Note that layaways past due over 30 days (with three reminders) go into default. Once in default the transaction is cancelled and layaway payments are not returnable due to having removed items from the market and losing potential sales.
Convo to talk about a layaway plan that works for your budget.
No offers, please. We have loyal customers who return again and again and use the return customer discount coupon for 10% off. We set fair prices from the get-go. If something is expensive, you know it's good.
We do run sales occasionally, so watch for those. And we value community. Community is EVERYTHING for a small business. Whether you are repeat customer, Facebook friend, or Instagram follower--our thanks to you is 10% off for supporting this shop. Please go to the About section of the main shop page and click on the social media links. Follow us on one of those platforms, convo to say you've done so and we'll send you the coupon code for 10% off.
We are grateful to YOU for allowing us to do what we love and meet your needs.
We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, you can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.
