Tonala Nesting Bowls Mexican Pottery Folk Art Rustic Home Decor, Mexican Decor, Tlaquepaque

Here we have a lovely set of four old Tonala rectangular nesting trays or bowls made of redware pottery. It has been increasingly hard to find sets of nesting bowls, or more than just a couple. I've had as many as six, and I'm so happy to have found these four. They come from the Tonala or Tlaquepaque area (the two are adjacent towns sharing artistic traditions), and these bowls are likely at least 1960s and could be older. The pieces are skillfully shaped with thin, not at all clumpy walls, but what stands out most is the color combination--a beige-yellow background with a simple flower in the center. While the trays could be used to hold something, I would not recommend using this them for food. Glazes from this era often contained lead, so use the trays to hold dried pomegranates in fall or the heads of spent roses in spring or any other pieces of nature. Or better yet, keep them empty and display them on a shelf--they are pieces of art in and of themselves.

The largest in this set is about 12-1/2" by 10" and 2" tall, and the smallest is 7-1/2" by 6" by 1-1/4" tall. Lots of spots where the glaze has rubbed away and small areas where the redware has flaked away. But the pieces are sound with no cracks nor large chips (smallish ones, yes, but that is to be expected for older pieces like these). This set weighs over five pounds without packing materials and will be double boxed for shipping--the shipping price reflects this extra weight and care.

Classic early folk art pottery that will bring rustic charm to any decor.
