Vintage Distressed Miniature Pottery Owlet Effigy Figurine, Possibly Zuni Nellie Bica Small Owl

WHO loves owls? If you do, you're going to get a hoot out of this New Mexico Native American pottery miniature owl (or owlet) made in the traditional Zuni style, with an eggshell white native clay background and dark brown mineral paint for the feathers, and reddish orange mineral paint on the ears and part of the beak and eyes. There is a small round piece of green felt on the base to protect the table on which the piece sat, and if were able to safely remove that, we may find this to have been painted by master potter Nellie Bica, who was known for making this style of owl. However, other Zuni potters also made these owls, and the maker of this one had talent, as it is small yet expressive. Zuni pottery in general is hard to find. From a gallery website that describes why: "Pottery making at Zuni almost died out at the beginning of the 20th Century. Believing the Zuni were a “vanishing race,” anthropologists from Eastern museums participated in the almost complete removal of pottery from the Pueblo. Boxcars were filled with ollas, dough bowls and other examples of Zuni material culture and sent back East. Young potters had no examples to look at, and residents of the pueblo had to rely on commercially-made vessels and containers for daily use. The art and tradition of pottery making almost died out. Because jewelry was easier to ship, traders encouraged artists to make jewelry instead of pottery. It was not until the mid-20th Century, under the tutelage of Hopi potter Daisy Hooee, was there a revival of the tradition of pottery making. Hooee, the granddaughter of Hopi potter Nampeyo of Hano, was married to Sidney Hooee, a Zuni silversmith. She lived at Zuni and taught pottery making. Since that time, there has been a gradual revival of pottery making at Zuni." This owlet is distressed, the reddish orange paint no longer even on the ears, worn away from touch. There are spots in the body where the paint has flaked away revealing the clay underneath. Because Zuni pottery is so rare, even a distressed piece like this is precious and absolutely worth being preserved and admired.

The owl is small at 3-1/4" tall by 2-1/4" across and just under 2" deep. Again, do expect distressed spots, but overll the piece is sound with no cracks.

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.

Can you tell me SOLD prices?

We get correspondance almost daily asking how much certain items are worth or what the price was of items that have sold, and we can no longer respond to these messages.
