This charming original oil painting was done in the midcentury, in the style of American folk artists such as Grandma Moses and the like. We know it was painted in the 20th century, as the canvas panel board used was from the 1960s. The artist--D. Rubino, about whom I have found no information--was clearly aiming to create a good reproduction of American folk art, as the frame is from the 1800s, with wear and repair. American folk art has been made for centuries but was defined as a field at the turn of the 20th century. "Folk art" is another term for "self-taught art," made by people with no formal training in fine arts. This particular image may have been original to the artist, meaning it came from his/her own memory, or D. Rubino possibly replicated the scene from an older painting by someone else. "Winter on the farm" was a popular topic for early folk art, and Rubino's painting includes all the common elements: a horse-drawn carriage on the road, a wood rail fence, trees, homes, and red barn. The wood frame might have been resized from a larger frame to fit the very wide yet short canvas board, which was often how earlier folk artists made frames for their art. Had the painting itself, like the frame, been made in the 19th century or earlier, its value would be in the thousands of dollars! Since it is a 1960s reproduction, it provides an affordable opportunity to own original art that, while not made in the 1800s, succeeds in exuding the look and feel of authentic folk art from that era!
The frame measures about 26" wide by 13-1/2" tall, and the canvas board measures 24" wide by 11-3/4" tall. The frame has big gaps at the corner joints--see photos for examples-- plus I've shown close-ups of the types of repairs done to the frame.
