Modernist Green Turquoise Necklace Spiral Symbols, Native American Indian Jewelry Southwest

$599.00

This vintage necklace is made of eight linked sections or pendants, slightly graduated in size and featuring a beautiful green turquoise stone in the center. Each section is a spiral, which is one of the oldest symbols used by humans, having appeared thousands of years ago in Southwestern Native American tribal areas on cave walls and on ancient pottery. From a website about the sacred spiral: "This symbol represents the female womb, fertility, and life energy. Spiral is observed in various life forms and energies: plants, minerals, weather, death, and growth. It reflects the pattern of new growth and the evolution of life’s journey. It is often used as a charm and it helps the wearer to accept the spiral changes and turnings in life. Since this spiritual symbol is believed to connect us to the source of life it also represents the divine power of creation." In Native American cultures, the spiral was derived from Native American solar hieroglyphics and is known as the symbol for eternity or for the path of our existence on earth. Spirals to the Zunis and Puebloans represent water, wind and creatures associated with water such as snails and serpents. From the book 'Petroglyphs, Keam’s Canyon, Hopi Mesas, Arizona', “It is a decoration of great frequency and consisting of single and double spirals. The single spiral is the symbol of Ho-bo-bo, the twister who manifests his power by the whirlwind. The myth explains that a stranger came among the people, when a great whirlwind blew all the vegetation from the surface of the earth and all the water from its courses. With a flint, he caught these symbols upon a rock, the etching of which is now in Keam’s Canyon. It is 17 inches long and 8 inches across. He told them he was the keeper of the breath. The whirlwind and the air which men breathe come from this keeper’s mouth.” The spiral also symbolizes a way of planting, starting at the center and moving out in circles as they planted. In Navajo, it was called ha’oolmaaz.

Everything about this necklace is striking, from the beautiful hues of the turquoise, the weight and quality of the silverwork, and the all-handmade chain that is thick and luxurious. Carries a STERLING stamp as well as the hallmark RL on one of the pendants, which could belong to Navajo Rob Livingston who up until about 1960 used no periods after his name but then started using periods later. Navajo Rose Lincoln and about three others also use an RL hallmark. The piece could be from the midcentury, as it is modernist in style.

The necklace measures 25" end to end, and can be worn shorter by linking the hook anywhere along the chain. It predates the contemporary lariat style, not nearly as long, but it is in a way an early lariat necklace with one pendant hanging off the center pendant. Those two pendants hang about 2-3/4", and the hang length of the necklace overall is about 12-13" depending on the curve of the neck. Weighs 45g. Some scratches on the backs especially of each of the spiral sections. Otherwise in very good vintage condition.

Not a huge piece yet absolutely stunning.

• For oversized boxes (larger than 108" total) going to Alaska or Hawaii the shipping carriers charge rates similar to International postage. As a small business, we can not absorb those rates, so anything oversized to either of those states will be cancelled for a full refund.

• If your item arrives damaged, photograph it with packaging so we may make a claim.

• Returning an item is no fun; contact us before buying to ask questions or request additional photos. I'd rather talk you out of something vs your being disappointed with a purchase!

Do you do layaways?

Yes, we can work with you on a payment plan with immediate down payment. We generally do 30-day plans of two payments, but for more expensive items we can do a 60- or 90-day plan.

Note that layaways past due over 30 days (with three reminders) go into default. Once in default the transaction is cancelled and layaway payments are not returnable due to having removed items from the market and losing potential sales.

Convo to talk about a layaway plan that works for your budget.

Do you accept offers?

Please, no offers. We receive so much correspondence daily that we are unable to respond to offer requests.

We have loyal customers who return again and again and use the repeat customer discount coupon for 10% off. We set fair prices from the get-go. If something is expensive, you know it's good.

We do run sales occasionally, so watch for those. And we value community. Whether you are a returning customer, Facebook friend, or Instagram follower--our thanks to you is 10% off for supporting this shop. Please go to the About section of the main shop page and click on the social media links. Follow us on one of those platforms, convo to say you've done so and we'll send you the coupon code for 10% off.

Will you reserve or hold items?

We do NOT do reserves or holds. Like any business, we use sales proceeds to keep the shop running. We truly can't afford to take items off the market. But even if you have some funds with which to make a down payment, we can do layaway with you. Just convo to say you'd like to do a layaway, and we'll work with you on that route instead of a Hold or Reserve.

Can you tell me SOLD prices?

We get correspondance almost daily asking how much certain items are worth or what the price was of items that have sold, and we can no longer respond to these messages.
